In June 2023 I visited Sorrento and the Amalfi coast with my mum and sister for three nights, however you could squeeze the trip into two nights with a late flight home. It was a great trip with a mixture of culture and leisure.
The journey
We travelled with Easyjet to Naples airport. From there we took a bus into the city centre to Napoli Centrale station as we wanted to take the train to Sorrento via Pompeii. However there were also taxis available at the airport. Once in the city we had a coffee at a local café whilst waiting for the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi which is right next to Napoli Centrale.
The train we took had plenty of seats and we didn’t need to book tickets in advance. The tickets were inexpensive and within 45 minutes, even though there is lots of stopping, we were in Pompeii. At Pompeii station we paid to leave our luggage and then we walked out towards the archaeological site. En route there were a few restaurants and we stopped at Hortus Pompeii Restaurant and Garden Bar for lunch which does not have good reviews but we had a nice meal there. After lunch we visited Pompeii - we hadn’t bought tickets in advance however they are now limiting numbers into the archaeological site each day so you should book tickets online before you go. I hadn’t visited Pompeii since I was a child and I found going back as an adult much more interesting. The site is very exposed with little shade so be prepared in very hot weather.
After a couple of hours we went back to the train station, picked up our luggage and carried on the train journey to Sorrento.
Where we stayed
Sorrento is one of the larger towns in Amalfi so it is a great place to base yourself. On arrival we walked to our Airbnb – Suites Sorrento Elegance Quadruple Suite - which was in the centre so easy for walking around the town and perfectly comfortable and clean.
How we spent our time
The following day we spent our time exploring Sorrento, eating and shopping. The next day we booked a full day boat trip along the Amalfi coast stopping at both Amalfi and Positano. The boat we booked was the Hydrofoil leaving Sorrento at 9.30am, and returning at 6.30pm. The departure ferry point was easy to find and it was a great way to explore the Amalfi coast. Both Amalfi and Positano are very small, so a few hours at each town was plenty.
On our final morning we went to the Sorrento ‘beach’ which is effectively a wooden pier with sunlounges to hire. We read books and sunbathed before travelling back by train to Naples to catch our flight home.
