Aix en Provence

In September 2023 I visited Aix for two nights with five girlfriends. It is the perfect summer weekend away, we had such a great time.

The Journey

We travelled with Easyjet from Gatwick to Marseille, and then took a prebooked taxi to Aix which only took half an hour. The journey was all so easy and we arrived in time for lunch at Ma Premier Cantine which was a really pretty restaurant with a great set menu.

Where we stayed

We stayed in a small hotel with mixed success. Half of the group was in a room in the hotel which was very nice, the other half was put in what seemed to be an Airbnb style apartment ten minutes away. This wasn’t made clear in the booking and it wasn’t ideal having our party split between two sites. Additionally the apartment had a very odd layout. So I wouldn’t recommend where we stayed. However we were in the centre of town and that really was the most important and the oddness of the set up gave us a lot of laughs.

How we spent our time

We spent Friday afternoon shopping, eating and exploring the beautiful town. On Saturday morning had a French breakfast in a local café before visiting the amazing Saturday market. It was filled with loads of great stalls with clothes at really good prices, so it is definitely worth being in town on the Saturday morning.

We then took a taxi at midday out of town to Chateau La Coste. The drive there took less than half an hour and it was definitely worth the visit. There are several restaurants there including fine dining. We had decided to eat at La Terrasse which is the only one that doesn’t take bookings in advance and is the most laid back. The food was absolutely delicious and very typically French and very fresh. Between us we shared most of the menu. After lunch we had prebooked a wine tasting which was also great, and fun to do an activity together and walk around the estate.

That evening we had dinner at d’Armour a restaurant in the centre of Aix (we had booked in advance). We all ordered steak frites and it was another great meal. On Sunday morning we had a leisurely breakfast before travelling home.
